Why London homes get mould — and what a purifier actually changes

London's older housing stock is unusually prone to damp. Victorian conversions, ground-floor and basement flats, solid brick walls with no cavity, and modern flats sealed for energy efficiency but under-ventilated all trap moisture. Cooking, showering, drying laundry indoors and even breathing add litres of water vapour to the air each day; when that warm, damp air meets a cold external wall or a chilly window reveal, it condenses, and mould colonises the damp surface. This is a building-physics problem, not an air-quality one, and it is important to be clear about that. An air purifier captures the mould spores already floating in the room, which can reduce the load you breathe and slow how far spores spread — but it does not dry the wall, and it will not stop mould coming back. The moisture source has to be fixed first: improve ventilation, deal with condensation, clear blocked gutters or leaks, and keep rooms warm enough to stay above the dew point.

Treated that way, a purifier is a sensible companion to remediation rather than a substitute for it. Spores are typically 2 to 20 microns, comfortably within the range MERV-13 media captures — around 93% of fine particles — so a high-airflow kit clears them from a room quickly. That matters most in the rooms where damp and sleeping overlap: bedrooms on cold north-facing walls, and bathrooms that struggle to dry out.
