Best Air Purifier for Mould

Capture airborne spores in a damp-prone London home — the companion to fixing the damp itself.

Mould spores are 2–20 microns — squarely in MERV-13's capture range. In London's older, damp-prone housing stock (Victorian conversions, ground-floor flats) a purifier reduces the airborne spore load while you tackle the underlying damp.

How an air purifier helps with mould

  • Spore capture: MERV-13 traps the 2–20 micron spores that trigger symptoms and spread mould.
  • High-risk rooms: bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms on cold external walls — run the purifier there.
  • Companion, not cure: a purifier lowers airborne spores; you still need to fix the moisture source.

Fix the damp too. A purifier removes airborne spores but won't stop mould growing. Address ventilation, condensation and any leaks — spores need moisture to colonise.

Frequently asked questions

Can an air purifier remove mould?

It captures airborne mould spores, reducing spread and symptoms — but it won't remove mould already growing on surfaces or fix the damp causing it.

Why is MERV-13 suitable for mould?

Mould spores are 2–20 microns, well within MERV-13's capture range, and high airflow clears them from the room quickly.
